If you haven't passed your Rook exam
already, do it now. Make sure you have gone over the Philidor and
Lucena endgame positions with one of the coaches before taking the exam.
The Level 3 team homework consists of 2
components.
-
Complete the
Queen level homework, which is based
on Yasser Seirawan's book Play Winning Chess.
It introduces the concepts of
-
force
-
space
-
time
-
pawn structure
Take and pass the Queen test.
Continue to use the
software package Chess Tactics for Beginners.
Because a lot of tactics is pattern recognition, one
time through is not enough. You want to develop your tactical vision
so that you can recognize the positions quickly.
-
Go through the
entire package (all of the problems) several additional times until you
can work them quickly and without penalty. If you have mastered a
particular stage and see the solutions instantly with 98 - 100%
accuracy, then concentrate your efforts on the more difficult stages.
For players under 1600, this is one of your most productive avenues of
study.
