Program Information

Overview

The T. H. Rogers Chess Program is made up of the following components:

  • Small Group Instruction

    • 7 separate classes offered after school: 4 Wednesday and 3 Friday.

    • Strongly recommended for all team members.

    • Open to non-team members on a space available basis.

  • Tuesday Chess Club

    • Open to all interested students, K-8.

    • We will run 2 in-house tournaments per semester, open to all interested students.  Each tournament is played over 5 weeks.  Sign up for each one individually.

    • Recreational players can just play casual games or they can work with the coaches, go over the optional homework, and test for a higher rank.

  • Weekly instruction to grades K-3 during the school day

    • For the past several years, we have taught chess to the students in grades K-3 every Friday morning during school.  With the addition of the 3 new rooms, we are still trying to work out a schedule.

    • Kindergarten receives a half an hour lesson every Friday.

    • Grades 1-3 receive 1 hour lessons every Friday morning.

    • Each room receives 3 chess sets for use throughout the year.  They are available to the students during activity periods and indoor recess.

    • There is no charge to the school or students.  The chess program covers the costs.

  • Middle School Enrichment

    • Chess is an option during 8th period enrichment for middle school students.
