Larry Englebretson

Coach Larry is head of the Houston
Chess Club, has been the Houston City Champion a number of times, and
has taught both children and adults for many years. Coach Larry
splits his time between T.
H. Rogers and the Village School. He coaches for us every Tuesday at Chess Club, teaches chess every Friday morning to grades
1 and 2 during school, and teaches a Wednesday afternoon class.
Coach Larry works all of our camps and teaches in our summer program.

Jeff Ashton USCF
Rated 2262 Coach Jeff has twice been the
Michigan Junior Champion. Jeff graduated with honors 2 years ago
from the University of Texas at Dallas, where he had a full chess
scholarship. He also has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Besides T. H. Rogers, Jeff coaches at a number of other schools and is very sought after as a private coach.
This fall, he will teach our Wednesday
1st grade class, one of the Friday Advanced classes, and will join
Coach Larry teaching every Friday morning in grades 1 and 2. He works all
of our camps, teaches all summer, and comes
to our tournaments to provide game analysis. |

Evan Michaelides

Coach Evan (5th grader
Sofia and 9th grader
Matthew Michaelides' father) has been a welcome addition to our coaching
staff.
While his job keeps him busy during the school week, he comes to our
Saturday tournaments to provide game analysis. |

John Hendrick

Coach John attended UT Dallas where he received a full chess scholarship.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Texas State University at
San Marcos, where he graduated cum laud with a dual degree - a B.S. in
psychology and a B.A. in anthropology. At Texas State, John founded
and presided over the university chess club. As a Scholastic Competitor, John was Texas Co-Junior
Champion in 1996. Between other schools and private students, he will teach
for us on Wednesdays and Fridays.
He also works all of our camps, teaches all summer, and comes to our
tournaments to provide game analysis. |

Justin Gardner

Coach Justin earned his degree in
Economics from UT-Dallas, and was also on the Chess Team there.
He holds over a dozen Mississippi State Chess titles, was the 2000 US
Game-30 Champion, and 1999 Southern K-9 Champion. He has been teaching
chess for 8 years, including camps in Mississippi, Texas and
Tennessee. He started teaching for us last spring and will work
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays this year. He currently teaches
private students in Houston. |

Warren Harper USCF
Rated 2324 Coach
Warren is one of the fastest rising stars in the US Chess World.
He started his chess career at age 14 and made Master in 2 years.
2007 has been a stellar year so far, seeing him win the Texas State
Scholastic Championship (and a full scholarship to UT Dallas) and the
Denker Tournament of High School Chess Champions (and another full
scholarship, this time to Texas Tech). Because Warren is
traveling to a number of major tournaments this fall, including the
World Youth Chess Championship in Turkey, and finishing high school,
he has time to work only on Tuesdays for now. |

Neph Diaz

Coach Neph specializes in
Bughouse and is one of the top 10 Bughouse players in the nation.
He is the 2005 Texas State & Collegiate
Open Bughouse Champion, and for the last 2 years been the National
Open Bughouse Champion. He has been the strongest
Houston Bugger since 2000. Aside from coaching chess and
bughouse, Neph also enjoys playing the trumpet, piano, ping pong,
or singing a little karaoke. Coach Neph joins us every Tuesday at
Chess Club and teaches Bughouse in our camps.

George John

Coach
George is the past President
of the Texas Chess Association and is a Senior Tournament Director.
(He is also Coach David's father.) Like Coach Evan, Coach
George's job keeps him busy during the school days, but he teaches
with us every summer during our evening program and he comes to
tournaments on Saturdays to help with game analysis. He also
works as a TD at our annual tournament and hosts our web site (for
free!). |
