Chess Homework

Sent 9/22/03

Parents and Students

Students who signed up to be on the chess team will have about 30 minutes of chess homework each week starting this week.  Those kids are in the competitive playing groups A, B, and C.    Any recreational players who would like to do the problem sets may also participate, but it is not required.  The recreational players are in groups D - H.  Each week's problem set is worth 3 points.  You may see the full homework schedule at Team Homework

Workbooks will be available this Tuesday at Chess Club.  The students have the option of buying the workbook for $10 or borrowing a workbook from the club.  If you wish to send a check for the book with your child, please make it out to T. H. Rogers.  If your child borrows a workbook, it must be returned at the end of the year without any writing in it, just like any other school textbook.  If the book is borrowed, their homework should be done in a notebook that can be turned in.

There are also problem sets that the students are required to do if they want to test for rank.  That work is outlined on our web site at Rank Homework.  The students do this work at their own pace.

The team homework is probably too advanced for any brand new K-2 players.  Those children should concentrate on doing the pawn and knight level work first (as outlined on the Rank Homework page).  Parents, if you have a first or second grade team member, it is your responsibility to ensure that they understand what they are reading and how to answer the questions.
