This is the beginning of our 3rd year and Tuesday was the smoothest "Day 1" yet. Thanks to all of the parents who came and helped!! If we continue to get that level of help throughout the year, I'll be thrilled. The cafeteria was clean at the end of the day.... chess sets picked up, tables wiped, and floors swept.... It was great. Thank you.
Even without the Kindergartners we had 105 kids playing chess, all of whom seemed to have a good time.
Orientation Meetings
There will not be an orientation meeting tonight, Thursday August 28th. My son is home sick and I only had a couple of requests for an evening time. If I still have a lot of families who have not attended a meeting, we will try to find a good time next week
If you wish to sign up for your slot or job, please contact Rita Rodriguez, our Volunteer Coordinator. She can be reached at: 713-644-6548 or by email at jhiggstx@aol.com
If you know how to play chess and would enjoy helping us teach the younger students, please contact me. We could really use parents to work with the Kindergarten and First Grade students. You don't have to know a lot. If you know the basic rules, we can get you up to speed in no time.
Again, non-chess playing siblings can come to the cafeteria to wait for their ride home. Because the Scrabble Club is not meeting this year, Ms. Larrew has lent us a couple of scrabble sets. Siblings can play scrabble in the back of the cafeteria or work on their homework. This offer is for siblings only. You will still need to fill out a registration form for them, write "HOMEWORK" at the top so I know not to place them into a playing group, and pay the $25 / semester snack fee. When they come they must sign in like everyone else, so I know who is in the room. And, they can have a snack along with everyone else. If they are middle school age and want to help work with the little kids, please have them talk with me.
My tentative start date for Kindergarten is Tuesday, September 16th. Look for a confirmation notice to go home the week before.
Please reconfirm with me by email if your child is to be picked up by the YMCA. I would like to have my own list of who is to go.
While there are chess tournaments virtually every weekend that the kids can participate in, we will pick one tournament each month to make a big push for turnout. For August that was the Klein Back-to-School event 2 weeks ago. The September tournament we are targeting is the Houston Scholastic Chess Association's event. It will be at the Sam Houston High School, (9400 Irvington at Tidwell, Houston) on September 20th. You can get the flyer here. That said, there is a scholastic section to the Texas Southwest Open tournament this Saturday (follow the link under "announcements"). Any child who wants to is welcome to participate. For other tournaments, there is a schedule on our web site. www.throgerschess.com
We had a hard disk failure last week at the Jenkinson household, so I am rebuilding the mailing list. Hopefully, by next week everything will be straightened out. (In case you are wondering it was a bad disk, not one of the viruses or worms.) If I have picked up an old address, please send me a nice email with the correction.
Thanks for your support,
Martha Jenkinson
