I have received a number of emails with questions on various topics. I will
attempt to answer them in a group email with the idea that probably lots of you
have the same questions.
A newsletter, registration form, and parent checklist should be going home with your children sometime this week - hopefully today or tomorrow. The same information is also available on our web site: www.throgerschess.com
I thought we had to go to the parent orientation before our child can attend chess club? Does this mean if we can't make Friday's meeting, that it's okay for our kids to go to the first Chess Club so long as we attend the meeting afterwards?
Yes. Most of you will be there Tuesday to pick up your children. It seemed like a convenient time for many of you to meet. Again please bring books, gameboys or whatever to keep your child occupied for a while if you think they may be burnt out on chess by then.
The chess club has a mailbox in the main office in the bank of drawers on the left. Please put the registration form and check there. The HISD forms (Access to Police Records and VIPS registration) go to Nancy Walker (Ms. Manley's secretary.... She also has a drawer). To sign up for your volunteer slot and or job, please contact Rita Rodriguez, our volunteer coordinator. She can be reached at 713-644-6548 or by email to jhiggstx@aol.com Please do not put the materials in the PTO drop box or give them to the Vanguard Office. If your child rides the bus, you may send the materials with your child in an envelope addressed to the chess club. Most of the teachers eventually got them to us last year. Note that you will still need to contact Rita. Finally, while it will help me to have the registrations in advance of this coming Tuesday, the children can turn them in to me directly at the first chess club session.
Yes. This is for siblings only. You will still need to fill out a registration form for them, write "HOMEWORK" at the top so I know not to place them into a playing group, and pay the $25 / semester snack fee. When they come they must sign in like everyone else, so I know who is in the room. They can have a snack. And they can sit quietly in the back and get their work done. If they are middle school age and want to help work with the little kids, please have them talk with me.
Their is much more to chess club than just playing chess. We need time to get the main club up and running before bringing in a bunch of 5 year olds who don't even know where the bathrooms are. When we are ready (I suspect mid-September), we will provide Mrs. Lambert with a notice that will be sent home to all of you inviting your kindergartner to join us. You may complete the paperwork anytime between now and then.
Thanks for the offer, but you wouldn't have any idea what we need, keys to the chess club closet where the coolers and other supplies are, or a tax-exempt picture id for Sam's. I am looking for one (or two) individual(s) who is (are) willing to do all of the shopping for the entire year and have the coolers loaded and iced sometime in the noon - 2 pm window. I have done it all myself for the last 2 years and would like to unload this job. It has to be done every Tuesday, because we try to provide something nutritious, not just sugar. Perishables (yogurt, cheese sticks, ice....) have to be bought that day. We have storage space for granola bars, drinks, popcorn supplies, etc. so some things are bought in bulk. Let me know if you might be interested in helping me deal with all of the snack and snack issues.
Feel free to ask whatever questions are on your mind. I will try to answer
them.
Looking forward to a good year,
Martha Jenkinson
