Every year, the Klein Back-To-School Chess Tournament kicks off the scholastic season. This year's event was last Saturday. Sending only 6 elementary students and 3 middle school students, T. H. Rogers still came back with the 2nd place Elementary Trophy and 3rd place Middle School Trophy. Go Rams!
Fifth grader Ace Isidro placed first in his division having won all 6 of his
games. Jim Jenkinson, 3rd grade, tied for first in his division having won 5 of
6 games. Thomas Kuncewicz, 3rd grade, and Joseph Lee, 2nd grade, also earned
individual trophies having each won 4 games. Those 4 scores combined gave us 19
games, well ahead of the Village School (a private school to the west) which
placed 3rd with 16 games, and just half a game behind John Cooper (private
school in the Woodlands) which finished 1st with 19.5 games. At the elementary
school level, these are the 3 powerhouse teams in the city. We will probably be
duking it out all year long. Elizabeth Kuncewicz, 5th grade, and Tristan
Lim, 2nd grade, also competed for the elementary school.
Our middle schoolers got lucky at this meet. We didn't send a full team (you
need at least 4 to field a complete team and we sent 3). However, all but one
other middle school had the same problem. So, Neal Outland - 7th grade, Steven
Pan - 6th grade, and Daniel Faerman - 6th grade, were able to capture 3rd place
for the school.
I was proud of the good sportsmanship, team spirit, and effort the kids
displayed throughout the tournament. Also, the kids had fun seeing and playing
with many of the campers they meet this summer. All in all, a pretty good time
and a great result.
Martha Jenkinson
