April Chess Club Announcements

Sent 4/5/04

Folks,

It is hard to believe that the end of the year is fast approaching.  I just want to go quickly through some reminders:

  • May 11th will be the last day of Chess Club for the 2003-2004 school year

    • Because of exams, awards, parties, and all sorts of end of the school year stuff, the last Tuesday chess club will be on May 11th.  We will have our awards ceremony and a party that day.  Also, on the last day of each semester, we always pull out the human chess board.  So, I will need lots of parental assistance that day.
    • There are 2 more Tuesdays in the school calendar after that.  Be sure your children and their teachers know if they are getting on the bus those days, or headed for the car pool line or what.
  • Register Now for Summer Chess Camp - June 14-18, 2004
    • Get your registration forms in soon!  We take a maximum of 60 campers and are half full already.  Less than half of those are from TH Rogers.  If you are planning on sending your child to camp, you need to get your materials in.  West U Elementary sent out a general announcement about it and I am getting a lot of calls.  For more info and a registration form see our web site:  www.throgerschess.com
  • Coach David John is offering 2 weekly classes this summer,   Monday and Tuesday evenings

    • Summer is a wonderful time for the kids to improve their chess skills.  Coach David is offering two 8-week classes for serious students.  These classes start the week after chess camp and will run until school starts.  While preference in registration will go to team members, because of the number of kids traveling overseas this summer, I don't expect the classes to fill completely with just the team.  Please let me know if your child is interested.  Also, please note that:
      • The chess team is open to any interested child.  Every tournament is divided into a number of divisions, so less experienced players still have the opportunity to compete, just in lower divisions.  A child does not have to be the best player in their grade or at the club to be on the chess team, they just have to have an interest.  The requirements for being on the team are that they tell us they want to be on the team, attend at least 2 rated tournaments per semester, get and maintain a USCF membership, and do at least 30 minutes of chess homework per week.  Participation in one of the team classes is strongly recommended, though not required.

    • Location, times, fees and other details can be found on our web site:  www.throgerschess.com Registration is now open.

  • Summer Chess Club starts June 3rd
    • We are running an 11 week casual scholastic chess club again this summer.  It will meet from 6:30 - 8:30 pm every Thursday night in Room AB of HISD's Weslayan Building B (near the corner of Richmond and Weslayan).  We will have coaches there.  There will be a nominal $3 fee per night.  The kids do not need to preregister, just show up on the nights you are in town.  It is a fun way for them to see their friends and to keep their chess skills sharp.  Details and a map are on our web site:  www.throgerschess.com.
  • Volunteers!  Volunteers!  Volunteers!
    • We have very few people signed up to help between now and the end of chess club on May 11th.  If you can come, please call our volunteer coordinator:

  • Schedule for Next School Year
    • Chess club is always on Tuesday afternoons.  We will start August 24, 2004.
    • The Advanced Tournament Player Class will be on Friday afternoons, so that our middle school students can also participate in sports.
    • The Beginner Tournament Player Class will be on Wednesday afternoon.
    • An Intermediate Tournament Player Class is tentatively set for Wednesday also.
    • Registration for these classes is underway.  We may add a 4th class depending on demand and instructor availability.    Parents, the sooner I know how many kids are interested in next year's classes, the easier it is for me to coordinate schedules and have instructors.  More details are available online at:  www.throgerschess.com.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
