Results from the State Meet

Sent 3/29/04

25 T. H. Rogers students competed with 1650 (or so) scholastic chess players from all over the state of Texas this past weekend in the 2004 Texas Scholastic Chess Championship.  This was the first state level meet we have ever attended as a team, and by far the largest and most challenging tournament.  As a matter of fact, the Texas Scholastic is the largest state meet in the entire country.  Only the nationals are bigger.

So how did we do?  Great!  Every team brought home a trophy, and 2/3's of the T. H. Rogers students garnered individual awards.  The tournament awards trophies to the top 20 individuals in each section and to the top 20 teams.  However, because some of the sections have 200 competitors, 20 trophies would only go to the top 10%, a pretty high standard.  Therefore, they also award Honorable Mention medals to other deserving players with winning records.

Primary Championship Division

Team - A team is generally 4+ players, but because there are not as many players that young (3rd grade and under) that play at a higher level in the state, it is a smaller division with fewer teams.  Therefore, our team of 2 was strong enough to earn 13th Place

Jim Jenkinson - tie for 20th
Joseph Lee

Elementary JV (U800) Division

Team - 13th Place

Curtis Roscoe - tie for 16th
Ankeet Mutha
Elizabeth Kuncewicz
Shantan Cheemerla

Elementary Open Division

Must have more than 2 players to be considered for a team award.  So, while he played well individually, Ace Isidro could not be team unto himself.

Middle School JV (U900) Division

Team - 4th Place

Neal Outland - tied for 8th
Karikeya Tayal - tied for 12th
Mengwei Ni - Honorable Mention
Evan Hoovestol

Team members!  Wear your black team t-shirt to club tomorrow!  We will try to get some pictures then.

Parents, thanks for all of your help over the weekend.
