Kudos to the
24 T. H. Rogers students who brought home 4 team trophies and numerous
individual awards from this weekend's Region V chess championship. Region
V extends beyond Houston and its suburbs to include communities such as
College Station, Huntsville, Beaumont, and Galveston. In chess speak,
the "open" sections are the championship sectionss. Players of any
rating, high or low, can participate. However, to give newer players a
chance to compete, the Primary, Elementary, Middle School, and High School
divisions also offer junior varsity (JV) sections designated with a U#00.
In other words, players with ratings over the designated level for that
division must play in the championship or open section Players with
ratings under the designated level may choose to play in the lower rated
section or the championship section.
- Middle School Open Team Wins 1st Place
- The team of Vince Ye - 8th grade, Steven Pan - 6th
grade, Aman Sharma - 6th grade, Kartikeya Tayal - 6th
grade, and Tian Tan - 7th grade won the Middle School Open
section and are the Region V Middle School Chess Champions. Of
particular note was Vince Ye's second place finish. Last year
our middle school kids placed 3rd in the open division.
- Mengwei Ni, 6th grade, also earned an individual second
place trophy competing in the Middle School U900 section.
- Elementary JV Team (4th and 5th graders) Wins 1st Place in the
U800 section
- The team of Ankeet Mutha - 4th grade, Curtis Roscoe
- 4th grade, Shantan Cheemerla - 4th grade, Spencer Shen
- 4th grade and Elizabeth Kuncewicz - 5th grade won the
Elementary U800 section. Of particular note was Ankeet Mutha's
second place finish. Last year the elementary JV team took 2nd.
- Our top elementary player, Ace Isidro, 5th grade, played
in the Elementary open section.
- Primary Open Team (2nd and 3rd graders) Wins 2nd Place
- The team of Jim Jenkinson - 3rd grade, Thomas Kuncewicz
- 3rd grade, Michael Cai - 3rd grade, Ayush Sharma - 2nd
grade and Tommy Williamson - 2nd grade finished in second
place. Jim Jenkinson's 5th place win helped move the team up.
Last year, we did not have a Primary Open team. We fielded a Primary
JV team that placed 4th. So this was a big jump for them.
- Tristan Lim, 2nd grade, also played in the Primary JV
section.
- K - 1 Team (Kindergarten and 1st graders) Wins 1st Place
- The T. H. Rogers 1st graders completely dominated their section.
They are the Regional K-1 Chess Champions, and deservedly so. Every
single one of them medaled and they won all 4 top slots. The
only games any of the top 4 lost were to each other. Note that the K-1
division is not divided into open and JV sections. They all compete
in the same section. So....powering their team to the best finish of
any team in the tournament were 1st graders:
- Ellen Xiang - 1st place
- Kevin Wang - tied for second with
- Truman Roscoe - tied for second
- Edmund Lu - 4th place
- Wilbur Li, Kindergarten, and first time tournament
participant Eleanor Gilbert, 1st grade, tied for 10th place.
In summary, T. H. Rogers has the bragging rights to being the home of
the Region V Middle School Chess Champions and the Region V K-1 Chess
Champions. Congratulations and Go RAMS!
