201 students turned out to
play at the Houston Scholastic Chess Association's October tournament
which we hosted here at T. H. Rogers. This was a metro-wide K-12
event drawing participants from as far as Bryan Texas and was the
largest scholastic tournament in the Houston area so far this school
year. Congratulations to our own Middle School team on winning the
first place middle school trophy and our Elementary team on winning the
second place elementary trophy. We had tremendous participation
from our own school. 24 elementary kids competed as
did 14 middle schoolers for a total of 38! That's the highest
number of participants we have ever sent to a chess event.
Because the tournament accommodates students K-12, beginner-experienced,
there were 10 different divisions. Our students competed in 8 of
them.
The team trophies were awarded
on the strength of all of their performances. While over half of the
T. H. Rogers students received individual trophies or medals (indicating a
winning record) the following wins were notable:
First Place
Tanvir Ahmed - 7th grade -
winning his division with a perfect 5.0 score
Kevin Wang - 1st grade - winning his division with a 4.5 score.
Second Place
Steven Pan - 6th grade - on
a tie
Truman Roscoe - 1st grade - on a tie
Kartikeya Tayal - 6th grade - on a tie
Third Place
Vince Ye - 8th grade - on a
tie in the Championship Division
Shantan Cheemerla - 4th grade - on a tie
Chris Gay - 3rd grade - on a tie
I was proud of the good sportsmanship,
team spirit, and effort the kids displayed throughout the tournament.
Many thanks to all of our volunteers who helped to make it a smooth and
fun event for all of the families who attended. Thanks to our coaches
Larry Englebretson and David John, who gave up their Saturday to come
analyze games, and George John who came as a tournament director. I also
particularly want to thank Rita Rodriguez our volunteer coordinator for a
job well done. We got many compliments on a fun and well run tournament.
