Parents and Students:
Our summer chess camp materials are now available online
here. The most important thing to know is that enrollment will be
limited to
60 students. To accomodate all of our own kids who
want to participate, we are opening registrations to our students
first. However, this T. H. Rogers students only period will last for
just 2 weeks until the end of chess club on Tuesday, February 17th.
After that, there will be a 3 day window during which siblings and kids
from other schools who attended our camp last summer can register in
advance. On February 21st, the day of the regionals, camp registration
will be open to the rest of the local scholastic chess community on a
first come first served basis. Note that T. H. Rogers students can sign
up for camp at any time as long as we have space available.
Basic Camp Information
Dates: June 14 - 18, 2004
Times: 9am - 4:15 pm
Where: T. H. Rogers School
Who:
- This camp is designed for scholastic players who already know the
basic rules of chess including:
- en passant and castling,
- the differences between checkmate and stalemate,
- basic notation.
- This is not a camp for children who have never played chess....we
will not be teaching the basic moves. Those children can learn to
play at our weekly Thursday night summer program. Check our website
here for more information on that program.
- If you have a kindergarten / first grade aged child, please
contact me before you register them so that we are in agreement as to
whether they are ready for a full week of chess camp. Some of our
kids are, some are not.
Format:
- Our format will be the same as last year, except that we have
added 45 minutes to the day allowing team chess to go from G/15 to
G/30 and giving the afternoon break an additional 15 minutes.
- Monday - Thursday, the kids will rotate through 5 classes:
openings, tactics, strategy, endings, and bughouse, and will
participate each day in team chess.
- Friday there will be a rated tournament and the opportunity to
play human chess.
- The kids are divided into 5 groups based on a combination of
playing ability and age. Last year we had 2 beginner (USCF ratings
<500) groups: younger and older, 2 intermediate (500 - 900) groups:
younger and older, and one advanced (>900) group. While this summer's
groupings will depend on who registers, I suspect they will be
similar. If your child does not have a USCF rating from tournament
play, we will make every effort to place him/her appropriately.
Fees:
- $250 before May 4, 2004
- $295 after May 4, 2004
- As with all of
our programs, we do not want the fee to be a barrier to any
child’s participation. Financial aide is available
to families as needed.
