Small Group Instruction - New Opportunities

Sent 1/3/04

Beginning Spring 2004, we will offer one month classes for various audiences on Thursday afternoon.  Fees will be $30 per session.  A snack and drink will be provided.  Class size will be limited to 10 students each.  Classes will meet in the Elementary Art Room from 3 - 4:30.  Sign up is through Ms. Jenkinson.  Checks should be made out to T. H. Rogers.  Again, we do not want our fees to be a financial barrier to any child's participation.  If they are, please contact us so we can work with you to make the program affordable.

Our first one month session will be Tournament Preparation for Unrated PlayersIf you have a Kindergartner or other young player who has never played in a tournament (or only been to December's team tournament), this would be an excellent opportunity for them to get prepared for the big meets coming up.  The class will go over all of the basics for kids new to tournament play, such as:

  • touch move rules
  • what to do if you have a problem
  • how to find your opponent / game
  • basic strategy including "how not to loose in 4 moves" (i.e. defense against the Scholar's Mate)

Coach Nancy Webster will be the instructor for this one, and we will begin as soon as we have at least 4 kids signed up - possibly as early as January 8th, but more likely January 15th.

Later on this semester, and definitely in April (after the state scholastic meet), we will offer a Bughouse class.  It will be taught by Coach Neph Diaz, Houston's #1 bugger.

Don't forget, we still offer the semester long Wednesday advanced class and Friday beginner class.  These are excellent opportunities for learn more about the game and to be prepared for the regional and state meets coming up this spring.  Coach David John is the instructor.

Please remember, when you sign your child up for any of these classes, you must inform your child's teacher in writing of the days and time.  Otherwise, your child's teacher will send them to the car pool line, bus ramp or YMCA as usual.
