Flash Report from the Texas State K-12 Chess Championship

November 21, 2005

We took 4 full teams to Plano (in 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th grades) and the results were..... GREAT!.....
 
  • 1st Grade State Champions!
    • Evan Xiang -  State CoChampion
      • there were 3 other children who tied Evan and are co-champions, but she actually won the 1st place trophy on tiebreaks
    • Seshni Naidoo
    • Barry Xie
       
  • 3rd Grade State Champions!
    • Ellen Xiang - tied for 8th
    • Edmund Lu - tied for 8th
    • Kevin Wang - tied for 8th
  • 5th Grade 2nd in the State
    • Jim Jenkinson - tied for 6th
    • Edward Yun - tied for 10th
    • Thomas Kuncewicz
       
  • 7th Grade 2nd in the State
    • Matthew Michaelides - State CoChampion
      • Matthew was part of a 4 way tie for 1st
    • Luke Zhu
    • Ace Isidro
    • Matthew Resh


Also competing for T. H. Rogers, but without enough team mates to form full teams were:

  • Vincent Zhang - 4th grade - 7th place
  • Victoria Zhang - 4th grade
  • Spencer Shen - 6th grade - tied for 9th
     

And other folks / competitions we cared about.....

  • Coach Warren Harper - 9th Grade State Champion
  • Vince Ye - 10th grade - tied for second (Vince is a graduate of T. H. Rogers and attends Bellaire High School)
  • Matthew and dad Evan Michaelides (who is also one of our coaches)  won the Parent and Child Championship for the second year running.

Congratulations everyone!  Many thanks to our wonderful coaches, Jeff Ashton, Evan Michaelides and Warren Harper who did some great game analysis for us this weekend.  And, thanks to the parents who spent a long weekend in Plano with us.  Keep up the hard work kids, and let's see what we can do at the Nationals!
