I know 3rd grader Kevin Wang is also going.  So we have full teams in 1st, 3rd, and 7th.  We would have full teams in 4th and 5th with just one more entry in each grade.  It is not too late to decide to go!  Registration materials are here: http://www.dallaschess.com/fortworthchess/2005stategradewebpage.htm

Our team room is Sabine B, the same room we had last year.  It is on the second floor of the hotel and has a balconey over looking the lake.  Coaches Jeff and Evan will be with us.  You need to be there no later than 9 am Saturday morning.  The first round begins at 9:30 and you will need to pick up your clocks, scorepads, etc.  Make sure you bring your team t-shirts.  We will be wearing them.  If you do not have one or you have outgrown yours, please get one this week.

My recommendation is for all families to leave for Plano at 12:45 early dismissal.  That will get you through the Conroe backup before rush hour and into Plano by dinner.  And, it is always beneficial to get a good night sleep!

National Grade in Houston

Wow!  Looks like virtually the entire team is turning out for this event.  I am thrilled.  40 registrations have actually been received, and another 4 are in the mail.  We may have the largest team at the event!  It is still not to late to sign up if you have yet to do so.  The cost is now $52, but will go to $70 in another week.  Details and registration information are on the following link:  http://www.uschess.org/tournaments/2005/k12/   As you can see, we will have full teams (minimum 3) in every grade.  If you are new to the team, please get a team t-shirt from us over the next couple of weeks.  (Price $10).

We have a decision to make about the team room.  I currently have one large room, with 1175 square feet of space.  However, I know a lot of the kids have final projects due the next week and exams coming up, etc.  We may have the opportunity to rent an additional smaller room to serve as a quiet homework study room.  It would be an extra $450 for the weekend.  The question is, how many parents would be willing to chip in say $10 each to help pay for a quiet study space.   If another team wants the room, we shouldn't be greedy.  However, if no one else wants it, is it worth it to your family?  Please reply.

There has not been enough interest in using a bus to get the kids to the George R. Brown on Friday, December 2nd to justify the cost.  The first round starts at 1 pm. They should be in the team room 335B in the Hilton Americas (the hotel that connects with the convention center) no later than 12 Noon.  However, I think there are enough parents picking up their kids and driving that those who need a ride could carpool with another child.  We can coordinate this by email.  But, please use the TEAM email list.  That way we are not spamming everybody else about our carpool arrangements.  If you are not on the team list (only this club list), you can subscribe by going to the following link:  http://netpals.lsoft.com/SCRIPTS/WA.EXE?SUBED1=THR_Chess_Team&A=1  Emails are then sent to the following address:

Finally, I got an email over the weekend from Diane Reese (res1yb6k@verizon.net), the USCF's National Events Coordinator, saying that the Volunteer Coordinator for this tournament "fell through" and she was wondering if I would be interested in the job.  I declined the coordinator job, as our family will be in Plano, and then we come home to a house full of Thanksgiving company.  But, as a team, I think we need to step up to the plate and help provide some of those volunteers that they need.  Of course, if any of you want to be the coordinator, please let her know.  Details follow under separate cover.  I will forward Jim Liptrap's email to the local scholastic community which provides some information on their volunteer needs.
