Camp Coaching Staff

 

Life Master Larry Englebretson USCF Rated 2204

Coach Larry is head of the Houston Chess Club, has been the Houston City Champion a number of times, and has taught both children and adults for many years.  Besides T. H. Rogers, he coaches at the Village School and at Annunciation Orthodox School.  He coaches for us every Tuesday at Chess Club and he teaches chess  every Friday morning to grades K - 3 during school, as well as the 8th period Middle School chess enrichment class on Wednesday,  and our Wednesday K-1 class after school.  Coach Larry also teaches and coaches with us each summer.

 
     

Master David John USCF Rated 2304
Coach David was a 4-time Member of the All-American Chess Team (1998-2001), 5-time Texas State Scholastic Champion and helped lead his teams (Lanier Middle School and Bellaire High School) to five Texas State Scholastic Team Championships.  He represented Texas three times at the Denker Tournament of State High School Champions and was the winner of the event in 2000.  He began teaching in our program 2 years ago.  He now coaches with us year round.  In addition to the Tuesday chess club, he teaches the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after school classes, and comes to our tournaments to provide game analysis.

 

   

 

Life Master Clarence Yeung USCF Rated 2218
Coach Clarence was the founder of the Houston Chess Club and has won many titles including the Houston City Championship, Texas State Team Championship, and National G15 Championship.  He has taught adults and children for many years.  He is currently coaching in a number of schools and programs including West University Elementary, the Honor Roll School, Yorkshire Academy, and the Crystal Learning Center in Sugarland.

 

Master Jeff Ashton USCF Rated 2262 
Coach Jeff has twice been the Michigan Junior Champion.  He enjoys teaching at chess camps, which he has done a lot.  He has taught at the Klein Chess Camp for the past 3 summers.  He has also taught at the Castle Chess Camp in Indiana, and Whitewater in Wisconsin.  For several years he has taught private chess students in the Dallas area.  He has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.  Jeff graduated with honors last year from the University of Texas at Dallas, where he had a full chess scholarship.  He moved to Houston this past January and began teaching chess at T. H. Rogers then.  He works with the Tuesday club and teaches one of the Friday advanced classes.

Neph Diaz USCF Rated 1816
Coach Neph is a Nursing student and a top Bughouse player.  His Bughouse accomplishments include: 2000 U.S. Team East Bughouse Champion, 2000 Texas State Bughouse Champion, 2001 U.S. Team East Bughouse Co-Champion, 2003 U.S. Team East Bughouse Runner-Up, 2004 National Open Bughouse Champion, 2005 Texas State & Collegiate Open Bughouse Champion and has been the strongest Houston Bugger since 2000. Neph also teaches Bughouse online and has been ranked #1 with a rating of 2500+.  Coach Neph joins us every Tuesday at Chess Club and teaches one of our Wednesday classes.
