Time and Place
Chess Camp will run from 9 am to 4:15 pm Monday - Friday, June14-18 at the T. H. Rogers School. The school is located at 5840 San
Felipe, Houston, TX 77057. You may click
here to see a
map. In case of emergency, the school's main phone number is 713-917-3565.
The camp director will also have a cell phone on throughout camp. That phone
number is 713-397-8758.
Pick-up and Drop-off
We will meet each morning in the cafeteria between 8:45 and 9 am.
Chess camp begins promptly at 9 am. Parents, please note: unlike
school, you may not drop your child at the curb. You must park and
walk your child into the cafeteria and sign them in. Similarly,
pick-up will be from the cafeteria only. Children will not be
allowed to go out and wait at the curb at 4:15 pm. You must come in
and sign your child out each day.
What to Bring or Not Bring
- Good Attitude - This is the most important thing of all
to bring. Please don't forget and leave it at home!
- Chess Stuff - We have plenty of chess sets and clocks, there is no
need to bring yours from home. However, you may wish to bring your own scorebook if you like
keeping your games in order. Otherwise, we will have score sheets
available to use throughout camp.
- Food - T. H. Rogers is one the HISD schools that
provides free lunch to area children during the summer.
Therefore, your child may eat for free in the cafeteria as well.
It is, however, cafeteria food. If you have a picky eater, you
may wish to send a lunch with your child anyway. The cafeteria
has enough food for Monday no matter how many children want to
eat. However, they have asked that we estimate the numbers who
will be participating on Tuesday through Friday, so they can
better prepare. When you bring your child Monday morning, you
will be asked to indicate your child's preference for the rest of
the week. I do not have a menu as of yet. I would hope that they
would have one by Monday morning. We will have a sign up sheet
available. The chess camp will provide a morning and afternoon
snack. While I don't anticipate buying any peanut products,
please let me know if your child has any food allergies.
- Medication - The nurses on campus can dispense
medication with a written prescription from your child's physician. Arrive
early enough on Monday to meet with them and be sure the
medication is well labeled. Otherwise, it is your responsibility to administer it.
- Clothing - T. H. Rogers is an older facility. It does
not have control over its own air conditioning system. And, there
is no thermostat. The air conditioning is either on or off.
Therefore, the temperature can vary widely. We know it will be
hot, hot, hot during recess, but if your child is easily chilled,
you may wish to send a light wrap. Also, we have had so much rain
lately, the fields are quite soggy. I am asking the parents of
all rising first and second graders to send a change of clothing.
Between the mud and the puddles outside and the ever present
possibility of bathroom accidents, it is only prudent. Parents of
older children may use your own discretion. Please be sure
everything is well labeled.
- Sunscreen and Bug Spray - The kids will certainly need
these, but it is better if you apply them at home.
Parental Assistance Requested
To run smoothly, I need at least 2 adults helping throughout each
day. More is better. The instructors need time for bathroom breaks and preparation.
We will divide each day into morning and afternoon and have
volunteers sign up for at least one session.
Behavior and Discipline
Participation in Chess Camp is privilege not a right. The faculty
and administration of the camp requires appropriate behavior from
all campers, in essence as outlined in HISD's Code of Student
Conduct. We will make every effort to work with children and their
parents to eliminate disruptive behavior. However, the Chess Camp
reserves the right to dismiss any camper who
repeatedly interferes with the teacher's ability to communicate
effectively with the class or with the ability of the camper's
classmates to learn.
