Fearlessly ignoring dire Y2K predictions, 51 players turned out for the San Antonio New Year Open Jan. 1st-2nd. (Yes, the lights stayed on, and the computer and SwissSys worked.)

Clear first place and $213 was won by Chris Land (above) from Houston with 4.5 points. Scoring 4 points were John Patty, Enrique Rios and Don Sutherland from San Antonio plus Jim Rohrbaugh from Kerrville and Rudy Tia from Ft. Hood. Rohrbaugh, Sutherland and Patty split second place ($42.66 each); Tia won first U2200 ($107) and Rios won first U2000 ($107).

The first U1800 and first U1600 prizes were split by Ryan Park of San Antonio and Victor Flores from Brownsville (3.5 points and $107 each). The first U1400/unrated prize was split between Joseph Molina of Brownsville, and Adit Wongsaroj and Alex Echeverry from San Antonio ($28.33 each).

The tournament was directed by Mark Harrington for the San Antonio Chess Club.
